What are Flax seeds?

It is a fiber and food crop known as Linum usitatissimum (Linum usitatissum). Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and dietary fiber are both abundant in flax seeds.

Flax seeds also include phytoestrogens known as lignans, which have estrogen-like properties. There is a lot of fiber in the flax seed seed coat. When taken before a meal, it seems to reduce hunger pangs. It may also help restrict the amount of cholesterol that is absorbed by the body when food is consumed.

History of Flax seeds

There were murals of blossoming flax on temple walls, and linen was used to embalm corpses in ancient Egypt. Flax was revered in ancient Egypt as a sign of purity, and priests in that culture were expected to dress in exclusively linen. Ancient traders such as the Phoenicians and Romans exchanged Egyptian linen around the Mediterranean.

During the Roman Empire's fall, flax output also decreased. It was only in the 8th century AD that Charlemagne restored the crop by making linen and linseed oil more widely known for their health benefits. In the Middle Ages, Flanders became the primary hub of European linen production.

Flax was brought to North America by colonists, and it thrived there, but cheap cotton and increasing agricultural costs in the early 20th century shifted production to northern Russia, where 90% of the world's supply was produced. Since then, flax has fallen out of favor as a commercial crop owing to the abundance of fibers with greater tensile strength.

Uses of Flax seeds

  1. Constipation Relief - Nutritional fiber comes from flax seed. People with diabetes and young adults who eat flax seed muffins seem to have more frequent bowel motions when they eat the seeds.

  2. Diabetes Support - Taking flax seed in the form of a supplement may help persons with type 2 diabetes regulate their blood sugar levels. Using whole or ground flax seed for at least 12 weeks seems to be the most beneficial.

  3. High levels of triglycerides in the blood - To lower total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol, taking flax seed by mouth seems to be helpful. If you've got high cholesterol, it tends to work best. Is it possible that ingesting flax seed may reduce cholesterol? There is no evidence to suggest that consuming flax seed increases levels of HDL (the "good") cholesterol.

  4. Obesity - When taken orally, flax seed may aid in weight loss, BMI reduction, and a smaller waist circumference in persons who are overweight or obese. A daily dose of at least 30 grams of flax seed appears to be the most effective. Lignan extract from flax seeds seems to be ineffective in this regard.

7 Amazing Benefits of Flax seeds

There are lots of reasons to love flax seed. Not only is it a great source of fiber, it also provides many other health benefits to any dish it’s added to. Here are some of our favorite benefits of flax seed.

Facilitate Absorption of Nutrients

Women should consume 25 grams of fiber per day, while men should consume 38 grams per day. The typical adult consumes just 15 grams per day. Just 2 tablespoons of ground flax seed offer women 16 percent of their daily fiber needs and males with roughly 11 percent of their daily fiber requirements. You'll feel better and have less constipation if you eat more of them because of the insoluble fiber in them. The bloating and feces issues of your life are a thing of the past!

Help You Lose Weight

Flax seeds have a lot of soluble fiber, which keeps you from overeating since it makes you feel full. Eating whole flax seeds, according to a review of research published in 2017, may aid weight reduction, particularly in persons who are very overweight. After 12 weeks on a flax seed-enriched diet, individuals who ate more than 30 grams (almost 4 tablespoons) of flax seed a day lost the greatest weight.

Heart Health Is Improved with the Regular use of Flax seeds

According to Largeman-Roth, the high ALA (plant-based omega-3) concentration of flax seeds is one of its greatest advantages. You can't make omega-3 fatty acids in your body, so you need to receive them from foods like fish and flax seeds. ALA-rich flax seeds are in second only to chia seeds in terms of the number of plant foods in the world.

Lower The Cholesterol In The Blood

People who require cholesterol-lowering medications should not expect flax seeds to take the place of such medications. Consuming flax seeds may help lower cholesterol, according to a modest number of studies. Lowering cholesterol levels is achieved by the soluble fiber in flax seed during digestion, which traps cholesterol and flushes it out of the body.

Blood Pressure May Be Reduced

Flax seeds have been shown in several trials to help decrease blood pressure. That's fantastic news since high blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other life-threatening conditions.

Possibly Aid in The Battle Against Cancer

Remember lignans, the flax seed-derived antioxidants? More than 6,000 Canadian women participated in a study that indicated that those who consumed flax seeds daily had an 18% lower risk of developing breast cancer. Women who had just gone through menopause reaped the greatest rewards.
