Smoothies: Why You Want To Drink A Smoothie A Day!
They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away but, I say a green smoothie a day keeps the doc away. Why? Because it’s a great way to get in your DAILY greens. You can pack a whole heck of a lot into one little smoothie with the right mix of ingredients. However, it’s not just any smoothie I’m referring to that you may want to incorporate into your daily routine. I’ll share my recommendations and give tips to on how to make the perfect smoothie blends. As I always say, it’s all about powering up and burning clean.
So why do you want to drink a smoothie a day? Let’s dive into answering that question in much greater detail in today’s post. I personally drink a smoothie a day for lunch. For me, it’s a nice, light meal replacement that packs a powerful nutritional punch without weighing me down or making me feel sluggish in the afternoon. If anything, it gives me a bit more energy by providing a perfect balance of protein, fiber, carbs, natural sugars and loads of nutrient-rich superfoods.
The Health Benefits of Smoothies
A few years ago juicing was big. Really big. Fresh, cold-pressed juice shops were popping up on nearly every corner. I really never understood it to be honest. Yes, you’re getting the inner essence of the fruits and veggies being pressed, but you’re also being robbed of the most essential part of the fresh produce, the skins and the meat of the fruit and veg. This is where ALL the fiber lives and fiber is key to your daily nutrition. Honestly, most of us don’t get enough fiber in our diet. Fiber is what keeps things moving along in the digestion process and it’s also what allows you to feel satiated or ‘full.’

Are Green Smoothies Better Than Fruit Smoothies?
The short answer is yes. Green smoothies do provide more nutrients than fruit-based smoothies. A green smoothie is rich in chlorophyl which is what gives green veggies their bright green color, especially leafy greens. And boy do they pack a nutrient-rich punch. Some veggies are more nutrient dense that others for sure but trust me when I say that you can sneak veggies into a smoothie pretty easily without ever tasting them or altering the taste of the smoothie (think spinach, cauliflower, zucchini or avocados).
I remember running my first smoothie demo for Blendopia at a Kroger in Nashville, Tennessee (my hometown) years ago. I could have blended and sampled our top fruit-based smoothie, Immunity, but instead I decided to GO GREEN. Why not. I got a lot of turned up noises from both adults and kids, especially since I was serving our greenest smoothie, Detox. The name says it all right!? Some chose not to sample but for all those that did, I got a consistent reaction. “Wow, I wasn’t expecting it to taste so good!” My answer, “Yep, and not only does it taste good but it’s crazy good for you too.”
Why Smoothies Are a Good Meal Replacement.
We’ve already touched on this a bit but in order for your smoothie to be considered a meal replacement, it needs to be the right smoothie recipe mix to hit the balanced nutritional profile. Let me take two seconds to share WHY I started Blendtopia. 10 years ago I found out a very close friend was battling stage IV cancer. - organic fruits
- organic veggies: definitely incorporate some leafy greens
- healthy fats: avocados, coconut manna, coconut oil, mct oil, nut butter or seed butter

- (optional) clean protein powder: I love sacha inchi powder but there are loads of protein powder mixes that you can find, just read the labels very closely (I also love Garden of Life products)
- (optional) probiotics: you can’t go wrong by adding a daily dose of quality probiotics to your smoothie; again Garden of Life makes great products that I highly recommend
- (optional) organic superfoods: level up with superfoods that are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients; think spirulina, chlorella, cacao, maca, wheatgrass, etc.

What Types of Smoothies Should You Be Drinking Regularly?

I promise you will begin to feel the benefits within a week or less. It’s crazy. You’ll feel better and most importantly, you’ll begin to see those carb and sugar cravings decrease tremendously. By the way, my go-to sweet treat is a square or two of dark chocolate dipped in nut butter. Um, yum and honestly super good for you too!
And remember to make sure you’re getting a lot of fiber in your smoothies. I love keeping cold-pressed, milled flax seeds for this very reason. I put them in ALL my smoothie recipes and it’s a great way to get your omega fatty acids as well.
