The BEST Tips for Healthy Skin
Healthy, glowing, soft, dewy skin isn’t for me.– NO ONE, EVER!
Let’s face it (literally) your skin is not only your body’s largest organ, it’s also sometimes the source of frustrating issues like dryness, wrinkles, excess oil, and irritation. All those problems can make you look tired, puffy, and feeling not-so-hot when we look in the mirror. I mean, hormonal acne, anyone? Let’s not even talk about undereye bags.
The great news is that there are really intuitive, simple ways to make sure your skin is glowing, soft, and dewy, and you can start right now! No, really.
STOP right now! Before you keep reading, go get a tall glass of water. I’m about to tell you why!
Water water everywhere…and you should be drinking it! Not only does drinking water regularly keep your skin hydrated and soft, but it also has a TON of other great benefits! Drinking at least 8 glasses a day will help rid the body and skin of toxins. Many, many people report that by increasing their water intake, their skin has a more radiant glow. And I don’t know about you, but if there’s a chance that something makes my skin glow, I’m all for it!
Here’s what water can do for your skin (spoilers, it’s a lot!)
1. Improves Skin Tone
Water helps the body to flush out toxins while giving you healthier skin. Studies show that drinking just two cups of water helps increase blood flow to the skin which can give it a more even, glowing tone.
2. Helps prevent aging
Drinking enough water can help increase skin elasticity and help it stay moisturized for longer. More elasticity in the skin means less sagging of the skin and no early appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Yes, please?
3. Reduces Puffiness
When your skin looks puffy, it’s actually retaining water to try and protect your body from dehydration (not drinking enough water). Staying hydrated helps keep swelling and puffiness in your face down.
4. Prevents Acne
Getting enough water helps balance the oils and water content for the skin of your face. That means drinking water helps prevent excess oil and sebum secretion, which means fewer clogged pores and acne.
If you’re not already reaching for a glass, here are just a few of the other ways drinking enough water can help your overall health:

- Significantly affects energy levels and brain function – for real!
- May help get rid of headaches.
- May help with constipation.
- Helps prevent hangovers (ask me how I know…)

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
I mean, this one is a little obvious I know. But daily moisturizing can be the make or break part of keeping your skin smooth and glowing. Moisturizers provide a seal over your skin to keep water from escaping. But did you know there’s a RIGHT way to choose a moisturizer? There is!
Choosing a moisturizer:
When choosing a moisturizer or lotion, it’s important to know what goes into them! Ingredients matter, and depending on the needs of your own personal skin, choosing the right one can be very important.
Moisturizers usually contain three main types of ingredients:
- Humectants: These help attract moisture. They include ceramides (pronounced ser-A-mids), glycerin, sorbitol, hyaluronic acid, and lecithin. CeraVe products are a great source of allergen-free ceramides.
- Occlusives: These ingredients —including petrolatum (or petroleum jelly), silicone, lanolin, and various oils— all help seal moisture into your skin.
- Emollients: These contain oil, water, and an emulsifier to keep the two from separating. These products are lighter and easier to apply than petrolatum-based moisturizers or oils. Many common moisturizers contain both an emollient and a humectant, such as linoleic, linolenic, and lauric acids.
Basically, the thicker and greasier a product, the better it will be for moisturizing your skin.
Some of the most effective (and least expensive) options are petroleum jelly and its vegetable-based alternatives, and moisturizing oils. Because these products contain don’t contain water, the best time to use them is while your skin is still damp from bathing, to seal in the moisture.
Lotions designed to moisturize your skin contain both water and oils, in varying proportions. These products usually include both humectants and emollients and can be applied to skin throughout the day whenever you need a little extra moisture.
Use targeted essential oils
Of course, as a Certified Aromatherapist, I can’t talk about skin without mentioning essential oils! Essential oils can be a great natural way to help keep your skin glowing and gorgeous! These plant extracts, made from flowers, leaves, seeds & other parts of plants. Many of essential oils can be amazing for keeping your skin healthy, glowing and soft!
Remember, everyone’s skin is different, so make sure you choose essential oils based on your skin’s own needs!
Essential oils for dry skin:
- Lavender: An essential oil powerhouse, Lavender’s anti-inflammatory properties can reduce redness and act as a natural hydrator to repair dry skin without making it too greasy.
- Chamomile: Chamomile contains azulene, which is known for increasing moisture and reducing inflammation.
- Sandalwood: This oil contains compounds that reduce inflammation and promoting moisture.
Essential oils for oily skin:
- Clary Sage: This oil is known as a go-to essential oil for controlling excess sebum, which helps keep acne away. It also helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles (once again – yes please!)
- Rosemary: Rosemary has anti-inflammatory, stimulating, and analgesic properties that help keep acne from forming.
- Geranium: With its alkaline properties, geranium helps balance your skin’s oils.
- Neroli: Another great essential oil for controlling sebum, Neroli helps balance out sebum without drying your skin.
Essential oils to fight aging
- Rose: With antioxidants like vitamins A and C, this oil can help promote skin cell turnover, which often slows down as we age.
- Myrrh: Historically, myrrh was used by Egyptian women for anti-aging skincare treatments. This antioxidant-rich oil helps with circulation, creating brighter, more refined-looking skin.
And of course, remember; When using essential oils for skin conditions, essential oils best when applied topically. This means using only small drops of your essential oils and diluting it first in a carrier oil.
Use just a few drops per tablespoon of carrier oil, then massage into your skin until fully absorbed.
DON’T skip SPF!
This is the deep dark secret of many an ageless middle-aged woman (I’m looking at YOU, Iman!): SUNSCREEN. And yes, we mean in the winter too! The sun doesn’t know which season it is, but it’s always ready to toast your delicate skin. Which might sound good except all those rays add up to wrinkles and sun damage over the years.
Sunscreen protects your precious skin from UV Rays: The ozone layer ins’t what it used to be, and this has increased our risk of sun damage from harmful UV rays. It helps maintain an even skin tone by preventing discoloration and dark spots from sun damage, helping you maintain a smoother and more even skin tone.
When you’re shopping for sunscreen, be sure to look for the following:
- organic ingredients
- natural ingredients
- over SPF 30
- Vegan/not tested on animals (cruelty-free)
Choose skin-friendly superfoods for a glowing complexion
Turns out – what you eat MATTERS!
You know that old axiom “beauty starts from within”? Well, in the case of your skin it’s 110% true! What we eat has a huge effect on our skin, and eating a healthy diet full of good fats, antioxidants, vitamin C, collagen, and amino acids is important for a fresh, glowing complexion and soft skin. Here are six of our favorite superfoods that are packed with the nutrients you need to directly benefit your skin (as well as hair & nails).
This fruit (yes a fruit!) is famously great for your skin. Avocados are extremely high in poly- and monounsaturated fatty acids. These fatty acids keep your skin looking firm and dewy, help regenerate damaged skin cells, and reduce redness & irritation. Omega 9’s help keep the top layer of your skin moisturized, which gives you noticeably healthy-looking and hydrated and skin. Avocados are also FULL of antioxidants that help your skin balance it’s water content and help boost elasticity.
Blueberries are full of vitamin A, which helps keep your skin’s oil levels balanced, and is very helpful in naturally clearing up acne-prone skin. Antioxidants are key in helping to maintain beautiful skin, and blueberries are a great way to get them. Antioxidants help fight free radicals (one of your skin’s worst enemies), that damage your precious skin cells and deplete collagen. That means more wrinkles, dry skin, and a host of other aging skin issues. So you NEED those antioxidants!
This classic spice is actually great for your skin! It has incredible anti-inflammatory properties, and inflammation can lead to wrinkles, puffiness, and aging. Getting turmeric in your diet helps fight inflammation, keeping skin looking fresh and younger, and helping relieve other inflammatory skin problems like eczema and rosacea.
This leafy green is a great source of iron, folate, chlorophyll, Vitamin E, magnesium, Vitamin A, fiber, plant protein, and Vitamin C. Because of their antioxidant properties, Vitamins C, E, and A are especially great for your skin. Spinach also has antioxidants that fight against all kinds of other skin problems.
These little seeds contain lignans plus antioxidants that help prevent fine lines and wrinkles on your face. The fatty acids in flax seeds also help keep your skin moisturized and smooth. Flaxseeds also help keep your skin tight and keep it from sagging with age.
These little berries help smooth your skin’s appearance. Goji berries contain amino acids, which also help improve your skin’s tone and color, keeping it glowing. Amino acids are non-irritating and help keep your skin hydrated. Keeping skin moisturized helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
Lucuma powder is completely packed with the important carotenoid known as beta-carotene – a red-orange pigment that your body turns into vitamin A. Vitamin A helps with cell repair and growth, helping to visibly improve your skin tone and reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Which- AGAIN – yes please!

Lastly, a few extra tips + tricks:
If you’re slaying it at the tips I’ve already covered, but want to take your skincare game to the next level, here are some extra pointers:
- Use a humidifier in the winter! Set it to around 60% to help moisturize your skin.
- Keep showers short. Limit yourself to one 5- to 10-minute bath or shower daily.
- Minimize your soaps. Consider soap-free cleansers and steer clear of deodorant soaps, perfumed soaps, and alcohol products, which can strip away natural oils.
- Be gentle to your skin. Exfoliate sparingly! Stay away from bath sponges, scrub brushes, and rough washcloths.
- Don’t scratch. If you’re itchy, this is a big one! Use a moisturizer to control the itch.
- Keep clothing comfy + breathable. If you have clothing made of wool, acrylics, or other fabrics that irritate your skin, give those garments away.
- Get enough (regular) sleep! Make sure you’re getting your 8 hours a night in, to keep saggy, swollen tired-looking skin from creeping up on you.
